Finally, it has arrived. The project which, at first, seemed almost tailored made for the African market, is finally making its way to the continent.
…And it is with the Infinix HOT 2 that the African Android fans will get to try out Google‘s idea of what a cheap Android device should feel like.
The Infinix Hot 2 runs the latest version of “pure” Android (Lollipop 5.1), sports dual-SIM slots, a quad-core MediaTek processor, a FM radio tuner, and 16GB internal memory. There are two versions — one with 1GB of processing memory, which comes in black, white, blue, and red; and there’s a premium version with 2GB memory, which is available in gold. It will be put on sale in Nigeria for $87.
The initiative, which did not receive the expected acclaim from the different markets it has been tried in, will be hoping for more success in Africa as it officially launches in Nigeria today. The phone will also be available via Rocket Internet‘s Jumia in Ghana, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Kenya, and Morocco.
Google (or Alphabet…Whatever…) also announced it would be extending YouTube offline to Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, and Egypt “in the coming months”. The feature lets users store videos within the YouTube app for up to 48 hours so they can watch them later when they don’t have a connection, or when the network they can access is too slow to stream.
